Kingdom of Hawaii Posted by Portland brewery tour

Chief Kamehameha became the main character and performer of the unification process. Having made friends with the British, a strong and cunning leader from the Big Island of Hawaii was the first to learn how to use firearms. It is not surprising that the outcome of many battles for the islands was in his favor. Portland brewery tour wants to teach the students.

In 1810, he successfully completed the process of uniting the Hawaiian Islands and became the Great - the sole ruler of all the islands. This year is considered the year of the founding of the Kingdom of Hawaii. By that time, the Hawaiian Islands were increasingly visited by merchant ships from different countries. The ships of the Russian expeditions under the command of captains Kruzenshtern, Lisyansky, Golovnin and Kotzebue also visited here.

The main trade was furs and sandalwood. During the stops, the ships were stocked with fresh water and food; the crews were "culturally resting." Anchorage in Hawaii became especially popular during the heyday of whaling in the first half of the 19th century. The ships replenished supplies of water and food, the "cultural" rest of the sailors of whaling ships - no need to describe.

For many years, the supply of whalers has been the backbone of the Hawaiian economy. Unrestrained booze-partying of sailors, temptations of imported goods undermined the ancient system of laws - kapu. As soon as Kamehameha the Great died in 1819, the images of the ancient gods were burned, the temples were broken. A few years later, the first group of American missionaries arrived to help the Hawaiians who remained in a spiritual vacuum.

What for? or What drove them? Thirst for profit, some say. The true faith of the Puritan Calvinists, the first colonists of America, says others. One way or another, it was the representatives of the missionary families who later became the founders of many business enterprises in Hawaii.

By the middle of the 19th century, there were practically no whales in the Pacific Ocean, and the invention of kerosene put an end to whaling. At this time, the state founded by Kamehameha the Great received a new source of income: sugar cane plantations. It is clear that some of the first planters were from the families of American missionaries. The geographical location of the Hawaiian Islands, halfway between Asia and America, largely determined the economic orientation towards America. During the California gold rush and the development of the Pacific coast, Hawaii became an important supply base for pioneers.

With the development of business and trade, the interests of business and the Hawaiian monarchy diverged more and more. On the one hand, the egocentric, fun-loving and cost-conscious king, on the other, an energetic, increasingly influential business. In the end, the politically weak Hawaiian king Kalakaua managed to remain on the throne only by signing a new constitution that significantly limited his rights. The resulting constitutional monarchy was tolerated until the death of King Kalakaua, but when his sister, Queen Liliuokalani, decided to change the status quo, she was easily overthrown. The initiators and executors of the coup were representatives of the business community, among which there were many American residents. The bloodless overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, supported by American sailors, culminated in the formation of the Republic of Hawaii in 1893. Portland brewery tour click for read more.
